Little Flowers :: Faith

It has been a few years since I first heard of the Little Flowers Girls Club. It was so long ago that my oldest daughter (now 8yo) was still too young to be part of it. But I remember thinking, "How beautiful! I can't wait for my girls to be old enough to do something like that."

And since beginning this blog a little over two years ago, I have seen so many beautiful Little Flowers groups shared via this virtual community. The effort put into the groups by such lovely mothers is quite inspiring! All in the hope that their little girls will grow in virtue, love of God and genuine Christian friendship!

And that was my hope, too. Don't we all want that for our children?

That hope turned into a longing to begin such a group with my own girls, now that they were older.

And that longing began to become a reality when I shared the idea with two friends last summer. They were interested enough that the three of us started our own group with our six girls, collectively. We brainstormed ideas and concluded that we would team teach each lesson, alternate host homes, and rotate snacks. Thankfully, there is a wealth of information on various blogs, so we were not without plenty of ideas. And we invited two more families to join us for a total of eight girls and five moms. All of the girls in our group are in Kindergarten through second grade.

Our first meeting for Wreath I was in January. And we decided that for this first year (It is a four-year program.), we would meet twice per month through the month of June, so that we can begin Wreath II in September 2011 and thus begin meeting once per month during the school year(s).

The first virtue that we learned about was faith. It is the center from which all the other virtues grow.

We learned about St. Catherine of Sienna. And how the sunflower is a symbol of faith because it always faces toward the direction of the sun. Just like we are called to always face the direction of the Son.

We decided to have the girls make notebooks, with a scrapbook-like page for each virtue. We are using the lovely templates that Jessica at Shower of Roses created and shared so generously.

Although we are still very new to this entire experience, as moms, we already have seen the fruitful blessings of this group. For our daughters. And for us as well. This is something that we can do with them and for them. It is something to share. Mothers and daughters. It encourages friendship. Especially for the girls, sisters in Christ. But also for us, as moms, as daughters of God ourselves. This Little Flowers group. It is a true gift.

Faith is confident assurance, concerning what we hope for and conviction about things that we do not see.

Joining Barbara in ...

... 52 weeks of daily life in pictures: trials and celebrations, the extraordinary and mundane—whatever is unique to the week.

I have tried to photograph the moon before, but my little Canon point-and-shoot just doesn't do the real thing justice. Nevertheless, the rising full moon was so gorgeous late last week. I couldn't resist adding it to this post anyway.

Even though we just got over a foot of snow, we can't help but think of spring around here. Especially after our brand new lawn mower (or should I say tractor?) was delivered. My husband is pretty excited! I was shocked to discover it is as big as a small car. But at least he won't have to spend half a day mowing the lawn every week. This will make that chore go by much more quickly. (Oh, and after watching the safety video, the children have been banned from even looking at it! It was good while it lasted, says my son =)

I received this book, a pizza peel and a baking stone for Christmas. During our snow day, I finally made two loaves of the bread. It. is. awesome. And so easy!

I was blessed to receive some special snail-mail this week. And decided to print out some of this pretty stationery for my reply letter. Can't wait for a quiet moment to begin writing.

A couple last photos of my completed prayer shawl before giving it away today.

Onto my next knitting project. I did a search on Ravelry to find some patterns that would work with all that yarn I received for Valentine's Day. I'm leaning toward a pair of mittens in Ella Rae Amity, but I also think the cowl and hat are nice. Decisions, decisions ...

Oh, and that 3-ring binder is a little "me" project I started this week. I hope to share more about it very soon.

Yarn Along :: Completed!

Joining Ginny at Small Things for another Yarn Along ...

This week, I set out to finish one of my WIPs before starting anything new. And I actually did it! Hooray! =)

I finished my prayer shawl. After nearly one year of knitting it on and off ... and on and off again.

(Here is my 10-week-old son modeling what a cozy prayer shawl this really is!)

The pattern is from Knit Along with Debbie Macomber: Back on Blossom Street. And the yarn I used is Patons Shetland Chunky Tweeds in Sea Ice.

I will be donating it to a local convent that gives prayer shawls away to ill members of their community.

As for books, I haven't read anything this week. I meant to start The Forgotten Garden, because it was my turn on the request list at the library. But I just didn't have the time to sit and get into it. I don't know if I will start it—let alone finish it—before I have to return it. (And of course there is no renewing it, because the request list is very long, I am sure.)

Well, that is about all. Not too exciting, but I am very happy about finishing something that had been on the needles for so long =)

Heaven's Design

The Eucharist produces impulses of angelic love and has the singular capacity of effecting in souls a holy, instinctive tenderness for the Queen of the angels. She has given us Flesh of her flesh and Bone of her bone, and in the Eucharist she continues to give us this sweet, virginal Heavenly Food.

First Communion Preparations

My oldest daughter will receive her First Holy Communion in about two months. How exciting!

As much as her preparations are underway, at school and at home, the actual "event" has not been on my radar yet. But, thanks to a couple friends, I am starting to slowly think about the actual day and all that it entails.

And I've realized that I need to start planning now. With six children and a home to maintain, I have to start things in advance, if I want to avoid anxiety.

So, now my mind is running in many directions, and I have so many decisions to make. And I need to try to do it without it completely consuming me, for my sake as well as for the other dear people who live under the same roof as me.

So, for all of you experienced with this very momentous occasion, I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind taking a minute to answer them for me.

1. Finding a balance. I think our culture has gotten in the bad habit of making everything into a party. Or should I say, has gotten in the bad habit of commercializing everything, even the sacred. Just look at Christmas ...

So, while First Holy Communion is indeed a very, very special (and sacred) moment in my daughter's life, how do I help keep it that way?

2. The dress. I have only done a little shopping around. But I already have discovered that First Holy Communion dresses are expensive. I noticed one store has them for less, but many of them are sleeveless, and I do not think a First Holy Communion dress should be sleeveless. Is it just me, or does this thought make sense? So, should I keep looking for a less-expensive option, or should I have the mindset of "This is such an important day. It is OK if her dress is expensive"?

3. The dress continued. My oldest girl has three younger sisters. They don't all need their own First Holy Communion dress, do they? Or can I shop for one thinking that at least one or two will be able to wear it, too? (They are different builds, so I know they won't all fit into the same dress when their time comes.) Or is that not fair to the younger ones? What would you do, if you had four daughters close in age?

4. Celebrating afterward. If we are to have a party afterward, how do I keep the actual receiving of the Sacrament more special than the party afterward? How do I handle the food, the cake, gifts? What is the right amount to really show the significance of such a special moment in her life, and what is just over-the-top too much? And is there a way to share our viewpoint with other family members?

5. Any other advice. I'll gladly take. Any tips. Any ideas you did with your children that were particularly special for them. I would love to hear about them. Especially things that really kept the entire day holy.

I can't wait to hear from you! Thanks for helping me out.

God bless.

Joining Barbara in ...

... 52 weeks of daily life in pictures: trials and celebrations, the extraordinary and mundane—whatever is unique to the week.

We attended our children's school's benefit dinner. It was fun to get dressed up!

The evening included a silent auction ... My husband secretly bid on an item for me!

We decided to celebrate Valentine's Day on the 13th, because Monday (the 14th) was crazy for us. (Monday is the one day each week when all of us aren't home at the same time.) So, because of this switch, I received my Valentine's surprise (that secret silent auction item) on Sunday.

Let's take a closer look ...

Yes! It is a knitting bag with eight skeins of yarn and various supplies!

Isn't it awesome?!

Here's an even closer look ...

Maybe to some, it's not oozing with romance, but it's perfect for me! I love it, for it shows me that Greg appreciates how much I enjoy this hobby. And to me, that definitely says love!

Normally, we just give little gifts (like a small card and some token candy) on Valentine's Day, as it's not a very important holiday to us. But this was a fun surprise! And I can't wait to figure out what I'm going to knit with all this new yarn!

I grew up learning that Valentine's Day is not just for romance. It is a chance to tell parents, family members and friends that they are special. I think this helped me through all those single years when I didn't have a "Valentine." It didn't bother me. I didn't wear black. And I didn't sulk. I just celebrated with those special people in my life. I want my children to have this same outlook. I want it to be fun for them. But certainly not the "be-all, end-all" day that it is commercialized to be.

More importantly, now I have discovered the feast day behind this holiday. So, we are able to bring it back to the Lord. Who is our first Valentine, above all.

So, above are photos of my Trio making Valentine's for family members in preparation for our family celebration.

The table set for our Valentine's Day family dinner. Before dinner, we went around the table and honored one another. Whosever turn it was picked one person to say something nice about. The children did a very good job with this. And it was a lot of fun, too. We all laughed together, and it was just one of those moments I will treasure always. Perhaps a new tradition has been born!

This week, it finally was warm enough to enjoy the snow! With sledding and fort building.

Certain children didn't particularly like the snow, though. Perhaps it was because she had no mittens on! Silly girl!

Well, here's to another week! And I'm now looking forward to a new weekend—a four-day weekend! (No school on Monday and Tuesday.) Hooray!!

Yarn Along :: WIPs

Joining Ginny for another Yarn Along ... This definitely has become one of the bright spots in my week! I really appreciate seeing so many different knitting (and crocheting) projects, and my to-read list has grown to be about a mile long, thanks to your fabulous recommendations!

This week, I am still working on my mom's neck warmer. I am almost done with it (about four rows left). But it looks exactly the same as last week, just longer, so I will wait until next week to show you the finished product.

In the meantime, here are three works in progress (WIPs). They are the projects that tend to get put aside for something new ... or something that has a more immediate "deadline" (like a birthday or Christmas).

I currently have three WIPs. One is my prayer shawl. It is a seven-skein project, and I am on the last skein. So, I am very, very close to finishing. I think I really should just finish it before starting anything new. The next is a lace scarf. This is very embarrassing, but I started this about a year ago for a friend's May birthday. I am only halfway done. I really should finish it for her birthday this May! And lastly, I started a pair of Toasty fingerless mitts in January. I do not have a timeline for when these have to be done, which is nice.

Last week, someone (and I can't remember who!) pictured this beautiful book in her Yarn Along. I was instantly drawn to the title—Faith, Hope and Love Knitting. I immediately added it to my Amazon wish list but didn't have to wait to purchase it, as I happened upon it during this week's trip to the library. It is a lovely book, and I have queued a couple projects from it already.

Oh! And, as promised, I posted photos of my daughter's Milo vest here.

Happy knitting! Happy reading! And for more Yarn Along posts, please visit Ginny at Small Things.

Above All

All expressions of love,
even the highest and the most profound
are verified in the Eucharist.

Thus, it is a Love that is crucified,
a Love that unites,
a Love that adores,
a Love that contemplates,
a Love that prays,
a Love that delightfully satisfies.

— Fr. Stefano Manelli, OFM

A bit of wintery love.

So happy he is feeling better.

She is finally the big sister! And loving it!

Love is in the air around here.

XOXOXO

Just in time for Valentine's Day. I recently finished up the Milo vest for my 3yo daughter.

Why is this particular vest so perfect for the upcoming day of love? Because of the cable option I chose for it. A hugs and kisses—XOXOXO—pattern.

Being that my daughter is a girly-girl and that the yarn I used is so very pinky, the XOXOXO cable seemed like the natural choice.

(The vest pattern has about five cable options, which is an awesome feature.)

This is the first vest I ever knitted and the first top I knitted for a person. (My first sweater was for Kit.) And I think it is a great pattern with which to begin garment knitting. It is fairly quick (always a good thing). And it is knitted completely in the round, meaning there are no seams to be sewn.

I learned several new techniques along the way, including casting on in the middle of a row using the cable cast-on method. Knitting new cables is always fun, too. I love seeing the design begin to form!

Overall, I really like this pattern, and I highly recommend it as very well written.

Plus, it's just so darn cute. Wouldn't you agree?!

My little girl does, as she dances for joy in her new vest!

Yarn Along on a Cold February Day

Real temperature as I post this: -7 degrees! It feels like -18!! (Hence the title =)

It's been a couple weeks since I've participated in a Yarn Along, and I've missed it! But ever since my son was in the hospital, I just haven't had a lot of time to knit. He is certainly on the mend, thank God, so I recently was able to finish my Milo vest (pictures here). And I just cast on a brand new project this past weekend. It's good to be back with all of you, sharing our needle-art projects and current reads.

For her December birthday, I presented my mom with a gift certificate for a hand-knitted item of her choice. But with my son's birth, Christmas and then with my son's illness, I hadn't had the chance to start it until now.

For her gift, my mom chose a neck warmer (or pidge), which is a shorter scarf secured with buttons. The pattern was free at the yarn shop I frequent. The yarn is Rowan Drift in Sombre.

As for books, I just started reading One Thousand Gifts. I'm only on chapter two, but I really like where it's going ... I have a feeling it will be a book that takes me a bit of time to read, simply because it is so full of thought-provoking ideas, words on which to meditate and other things to offer in prayer.

Well, that is all for this frigid Wednesday! For more Yarn Along inspiration, visit Ginny at Small Things.

Half Asleep

I hear him stir.
Oh, maybe he'll fall back to sleep. The tiredness weighs upon my entire body.

A few seconds later, I hear his little cry.
He needs me.

As much as I love my sleep, I have to remember what I'm here for. Why I'm needed. Who it is that needs my help, comfort and love.

What a blessing! How humbling! That this child doesn't need just anyone; he needs me.

I pull myself out of the coziness of the blankets and pillows. I find my warm slippers. (It is winter in Minnesota, after all.) I pick him up and cradle him to my chest. He is so small, so soft, so sweet.

While I am feeding him, I doze off in the quiet of the early morning hours. Sometimes I am more awake if something is on my mind. But really, I am only half asleep, half awake.

I have attempted prayer, but it has only been a little attempt. I almost gave up trying, because I would get lost in the words of the prayer. Did I already say that part? How many Hail Marys have I already prayed? Is my mind really focused? Is it OK if I am praying without being completely mindful of His presence?

Then, I received a quote that spoke to me during this sleep-deprived phase I am in. It reminded me of His love, even if my prayers and thoughts aren't completely focused. He loves me, even when I am half asleep, and He desires to spend those few moments with me. To keep me company in the darkness of the night. Because He knows I need Him, just like my baby needs me.

You were wondering how to use those moments when you wake up in the night. Speak to Me of love, ardently desiring your next Communion ... Call Me by the gentlest names, even when you are half asleep.

—Our Lord to Gabrielle Bossis
from He and I

#41 ... for the blessing and honor of being a mom

Go Team!

We just got home from Mass. Father joked that his wearing of green was not to endorse any particular team. And that he would be wearing it again next Sunday regardless of tonight's champion.

Then, we took a quick trip to SuperTarget to buy treats for tonight's game. We have an abundance of chips in our pantry now. And Velveeta! Oh, boy ... I picked a couple of healthier options for myself =)

As for tonight's game, we will be joining with our neighbors just to the east, and cheering for the Packers. Or the Crackers, as my 3yo son calls them.

We don't own any green and gold attire, but Charlotte has a cute pom-pom craft tutorial that we will try before the game.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday, friends! Have fun!
